Bolon and Missoni - Natural Continuation
The organic collaboration between Bolon and Missoni continues with new renditions of the Bolon by Missoni flooring range. Elementally affected and inspired by nature, the extended range now include a progressively autumnal, contemporary rustic palette with four new colours of the classical Flame pattern, evoking stone, rust, wood and lush green foliage. A bucolic counterpoint to the vivid tones of the original Bolon by Missoni range launched in 2012, the new collection is aesthetically versatile, beautiful, luxurious, functional and fashionable, adaptable to all sorts of public spaces. Iconic Missoni. Quintessentially Bolon.
Rosita Missoni’s first encounter with Bolon occurred when Missoni Home was decorating Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh. Bolon flooring was chosen for the hotel’s spa facility. An instant, emotional and practical frisson between the Swedish Bolon and the Italian Missoni was evident. Kindred spirits in both business and home life, both are fascinated by colour, weft and weave and both operate as multi-generational family-orientated concerns.
Missoni’s work in fashion and interior is very much inspired by the colours and textures of the nature surrounding the family home in Sumirago, Varese and its view of the Monte Rosa. Nature in Ulricehamn has had a similarly positive effect on the design process for the Bolon family, with the lush scenery and warm colours of the lakes and the undulating hillsides. The outdoors come indoors, subtly communicating Bolon’s commitment to environmental manufacturing methods and its eventual goal of a future without footprints.
The first official Bolon/Missoni collaboration was unveiled at Salone del Mobile, 2012 when the two companies co-hosted a forest-inspired “Bois de Bolon” show, launching the inaugural Bolon by Missoni line – three choices named Bayadere, Flame and Optical.
“Missoni is the perfect partner,” explains Bolon’s Marie Eklund. “They are experts when it comes to intricate patterns – but weaving patterns requires different techniques so we invested in jacquard machinery that allows us to work with even finer threads. The results are truly beautiful – earthy and homely but very contemporary, adding a natural and endearing warmth to public spaces which can often be cool, harsh, uninviting and impersonal. ”With these latest additions to the Bolon by Missoni range, an organic relationship continues to flourish.
Blending craftsmanship with high technology and aesthetic invention with the development of form, Missoni is one of the world’s best-known and most popular fashion and design brands. The Missoni style reflects the successful venture of Ottavio and Rosita Missoni and their three children. Missoni introduced the boldly colourful “put together” concept of zigzags, stripes, waves and flame stitches to patchworks of geometric and floral jacquards, that continues to influence contemporary lifestyles.
Bolon is a Swedish cutting-edge design company managed by sisters Annica and Marie Eklund, the third generation of the family to own the company. They have developed the company from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand, with a focus on innovative flooring and creative interiors. Bolon’s list of clientèle includes Missoni, Armani, Google, Mercedes and Sheraton as well as leading architects and designers such as Tom Dixon, Jean Nouvel and Cappellini.
